Assignment 8: Informative Speech Research

Dear Seventh Graders,

Today you will be completing the research necessary for you to outline and give your informative speech next week.

1. Overview: Please read the following brief outline of how to organize and research for an informative speech.

2. Citation: In order to keep good track of your references and research, you will be creating notecards like we discussed. As a reminder, one side should show say your theme, and the other should have the website or book AND the specific information.

3. Research: Use this website to find approved websites where you can research your informative topic. Using the guidelines we discussed, you should leave class today with at least eight notecards that include website and informatio written in your own words.

Assignment 8: Oliver Twist cont.

Dear Students,

Please visit your own blogs today and read the comments I have left each of you. For those who posted their poems and their summaries on the Victorian era, I greatly enjoyed reading them! If you are missing work, please post it sometime outside of class.

Your task for today is to continue research on the Victorian Era, as next week we will begin comparing the truths of this era with Dickens' portrayal of it in Oliver Twist. Please complete all work on your own paper.

Assignment 7: Oliver Twist

Today you are going to research the Victorian era, the time period in which the novel Oliver Twist is set. Your task is to peruse the following websites to gain a basic understanding of the social and historical aspects of the period. When you are done, on your own blog, write 2-3 paragraphs to explain the Victorian Era. Your paragraphs should focus on a few of the following points:

3. Rich and Poor
4. Street Life
5. Historical Events

From an English perspective, please have an introduction and conclusion sentence, explaining why you are writing about the Victorian era.

Assignment 6: Narrative Poetry

Directions:
1. Type your narrative poetry in a blank Word document, print it out, and hand into me.
2. Then, copy and paste the poetry into a blog post on your blog. Write an introduction to your poem including the book you used for inspiration and why you chose this event.
3. Lastly, read one of your classmates' poems and write a comment on his or her blog. In your comment, identify one poetic device with example and write one aspect of the poem you liked.

*Remember that your poem should include the following:
Title
Name of Author
Minimum of 20 lines
At least three poetic devices

Narrative Poetry Assignment #1

Internet Scavenger Hunt

Directions: Go to each website to find the answers to the questions, then write the answers on the sheet of paper provided.

Early in the twentieth century,the modernist movement was challenging tradition by inventing radical new approaches to art and literature; for example, some poets began to write "free verse," which is poetry without traditional forms of meter and rhyme. What was the attitude of Alfred Noyes toward these changes?

Assignment 5: Wrap-up Miracle Worker

ASSIGNMENT: RESEARCH THE TOPIC USING THE INTERNET, BOOKS AND MAGAZINES. THEN PREPARE A WRITTEN REPORT ON THE TOPIC. THIS ASSIGNMENT WILL BE GIVEN TWO GRADES. ONE FOR THE WRITTEN REPORT (GRADED BY ME) WHICH WILL BE WORTH 100 POINTS AND ONE FOR THE ORAL PRESENTATION YOU WILL GIVE TO THE CLASS (GRADED BY YOUR CLASSMATES AND ME) WHICH WILL BE WORTH 100 POINTS.

TOPICS:
1. Research the life of Helen Keller. Write a biographical sketch which should include her achievements and triumphs.

2. Research the life of Louis Braille, the inventor of the Braille Method.

3. The history of Gallaudet University.

4. The history of American Sign Language.

5. Louis Braille created a method by which blind people can read. Research the Braille method. How does it work?

6. Research Annie Sullivan including her background, her education and her accomplishments.

7. Annie derived some of her techniques from those Samuel Gridley Howe had used with Laura Bridgman, a blind-deaf girl that he had taught at the Perkins Institute. Prepare a report on Laura Bridgman and her relationship with Annie Sullivan, her roommate.

8. Musicians Ray Charles & Stevie Wonder are blind. Prepare a report discussing the effect of blindness on their musical careers

9. Discuss in a report the importance of guide dogs to the blind. Include a history of the guide dog in your report.

REQUIREMENTS:

Written Report:
1. All reports must be word processed.


2. Reports should be double spaced & at least 1 ½ pages in length.


3. Correct heading. (Remember to use the final due date for your date.)


4. Use third person, present tense in your report.


5. All reports should have a creative title.



Oral Report:
1. Create a powerpoint to present to the class.


2. 4-6 slides are required.

Assignment 4: Quick Write

1. Assignment 3: Make sure you have finished your Captain Keller Business Letter. Remember that I am looking for proper business letter format and your inclusion of all necessary aspects.

2. Quick Write: This is not as formal writing as the letter. Choose one of the following prompts, brainstorm ideas in your head or on scratch paper, and then write (type) for 10-15 minutes. You should have 2-4 paragraphs. I will be grading you based on the point(s) you make.

*In the Miracle Worker, do you think Helen's worst handicap is deafness or blindness?
*What is the climax to the play?
*How did the institution where Annie grow up make her "strong"?
*Why do you think water, "wah, wah," is the first word Helen recognized?
*How does Annie think Helen can come out of her shell like a chick?
*Who are Annie's antagonists (opponents) throughout her life?

3. Vocabulary: Go to Quizlet here, and first study the vocabulary words and definitions by "flipping" the flashcards and moving the arrows back and forth. After you study the set of words 1-2 times, you may test yourself, play Scatter or Space Race.
